■ 集団の決定の質がしばしば個人の決定の質よりも劣ることがあることを検討することを通じて概念化されたもの。
凝集性の高い集団の中で、そのメンバーが集団の決定にとって重要な情報を適切に処理しそこなうことから生じる思考の形態であるとされる。
集団の中での意見の一致追求傾向を中心として、メンバーが個人的な疑問を抑圧し、他メンバーに対してその批判的思考をさえぎり、集団全体として過度の楽観主義、外集団の蔑視や軽視、スローガン的単純思考(ステレオタイプ的思考)などの傾向に陥ることが原因で集団討議の質が低下する。

集団思考の特徴は大きく３つのタイプに分けられる。

タイプ１過度の楽観主義が支配的になる、集団固有の道徳を無批判に支持するなどの集団の力および道徳性への過大視。
タイプ２不都合な情報を割り引いて合理化する、外集団をステレオタイプ化するなどの閉鎖的な心理傾向。
タイプ３集団からの逸脱を防ぐ自己検閲、満場一致の幻想、自薦の用心棒などの斉一性への圧力。

集団思考を防ぐための対処法として、
(1) リーダーが批判的な評価者となり、成員が異なる意見を出しやすくする。
