植物の根の先端部で、ほぼ最先端部の根冠、そのすぐ上部(形態学的には基部側)の根端分裂組織、およびその活動によりできた未分化な根の一次組織を含む。茎頂とともに植物の軸的器官である根と茎の末端に位置し、頂端分裂組織の活動によって植物体の一次組織の形成を行うが、根端は茎頂と異なり根冠を備えること、葉のような側生器官をつくらないなど、活動の仕方や構造は著しく異なる。
根冠は根端分裂組織の細胞分裂活動により先端側へつくられるが、根とは独立した始原細胞群(分裂組織のなかで、いつまでもそこにとどまる細胞群)によってつくられる植物もある。根冠は根端分裂組織を保護し、その外側から順々に死んで枯れ落ちる。根端分裂組織はその構造から、多くのシダ植物のように1個の始原細胞をもつ型や、トウモロコシのように根冠、表皮と皮層、中心柱(ちゆうしんちゆう)の三つの始原細胞群をもつ型などに分けられる。しかし実際の細胞分裂活動を調べると、最先端部は静止中心とよばれて活性が低い例が多く、その周りの部分で活発な細胞増殖がみられ、さらにすこし離れた上部に細胞増大の著しい伸長帯がある。〈西野栄正〉
