Immagino che l\'origine del soprannome giocasse tra questa allusione al suo essere australiano (come fatto neutrale) - digger - e propenso alla stampa scandalistica e trash - dirty -, anche nel senso figurativo di digging dirt...

Credo che rendere con \"sporcaccione\" o \"zozzone\" o \"maniaco\" non rifletterebbe in modo accurato l\'intento di quel soprannome, che mi pare si riferisca non al suo stile di vita o al suo carattere personale, ma ai contenuti dei suoi medi; l\'idea è più che sia un abile venditore di stampa spazzatura, che non uno zozzone lui.... Quindi IMHO tradurre con \"lo sporcaccione\" può essere ambiguo in questo caso, perché sembra che si riferisca a lui come persona, non a quello di cui si occupa. È una definizione che potrebbe andare benissimo, per esempio, per Hugh Hefner, il cui stile di vita è perfettamente consono ai contenuti che vende. Murdoch invece è un conservatore, un born-again Christian, che però non si fa scrupoli a incoraggiare ogni tipo di stampa scandalistica, sia come contenuti al limite del porno-soft, sia come genere di stampa (e tv) trash. Il nomignolo \"Dirty Digger\" è stato inventato in UK (dalla rivista di satira \'Private Eye\', come si dice in uno dei link sopra), e lì la critica principale a Murdoch è proprio quella di avere contribuito notevolmente ad abbassare il livello della stampa popolare, non tanto o non solo per le ragazze seminude in terza pagina ma per tutto il resto, lo stile proprio delle notizie sui suoi tabloid in particolare.
