“I had rather play than work” is EQUIVALENT to “I prefer to play than work”. Further example
“I had better to stay here” is EQUIVALENT to “I prefer to stay here”.

जी नहीं, मैं इससे सहमत नहीं हूँ। यह भूतकाल का ही वाक्य है और यहाँ had के साथ played का ही प्रयोग होना चाहिए था। जहाँ भी had का प्रयोग हो गया, वह future का वाक्य तो हो ही नहीं सकता।

इस वाक्य में "Would rather" की तरह "Had rather" का प्रयोग हुआ है। वाक्य में Had होने से ही उसे भूतकाल का समझ लेना भ्रम है। played नहीं, play का ही प्रयोग होगा। English term or phrase खाने में अपने "प्रश्न" को लिखा करें तो बेहतर रहे।

There are many like “had better”, “had rather”, “sooner than” etc which are not pleasant to ears, but correct.

“I had rather play than work” is EQUIVALENT to “I prefer to play than work”. Further example
“I had better to stay here” is EQUIVALENT to “I prefer to stay here”.
