I understand that "hood" was the problematic word and it was translated perfectly by my peers.
However, פתוח = open - and this is what one is told to do by the filler at the gasoline station, if one wants a check of liquid levels.
מורם means literally "raised" but it conveys the picture and is of higher register than the literally translation "היה למעלה" which the original answerer avoided too.
