It was established by William the Conqueror to recover the king's debts and duties; it was inferior to both the court of the King's Bench and the court of common pleas, but served as both a court of law and equity. It took its name from the chequered cloth which covered its table and was marked and scored when the king's accounts were prepared. Σε περίπτωση έφεσης σε πρωτοβάθμια απόφαση του β τμήματος, αρμόδιο είναι το εν λόγω " τμήμα" (chamber) του court of exchequer το οποίο δικάζει σε δεύτερο βαθμό. Και λέω τμήμα γιατί εικάζω ότι δεν αποτελεί αυτόνομο δικαστήριο (αν ήταν αυτόνομο δε θα λεγόταν court?)...
