English term or phrase: make complete contextual sense
These deviations are all relatively minor. They include spelling variants of names (e.g. Ingaevones > Ingvaeones in Germania 2.2), the addition of what seem to be missing words and the correction of corrupted grammar. Sometimes both the alternative readings make complete contextual sense: for Germania 22.3, Rives used Winterbottom’s reading licentia loci (‘in the licence of the occasion’) even though he admits that most manuscripts have the equally sensible licentia ioci (‘in the licence of jesting’) and relegate Winterbottom’s alternative wording to a marginal note (Rives in Tacitus 1999: 213).

Explanation:
Δηλαδή, όποια από τις δύο διαφορετικές αναγνώσεις των χειρογράφων κι αν μεταφράσει κανείς (είτε το «licentia loci» είτε το «licentia ioci» που έχουν διαφορετικές εκδόσεις των χειρογράφων), και οι δύο αποδόσεις ευσταθούν, βγάζουν νόημα, στο συγκεκριμένο (συγ)κείμενο.
