We gave them the light of knowledge... Τους δώσαμε τα φώτα... Explanation: 'We gave them the light of knowledge and we have been left with the light from cheap tallow candles' is the English version according to Fiada. Τους δώσαμε τα φώτα και μείναμε στα (μαύρα τα) σκοτάδια is the older version I'm familiar with. Τους δώσαμε τα φώτα και μείναμε με τα καντηλάκια is the version Fiada translates. We occasionally say "τα φώτα του πολιτισμού" (the light of civilization). |
