Who’s deciding what is green, what is natural, what is sustainable? How can we be sure whether the product we are buying is ecologically friendly? These questions relates to the wide availability of products that are promoted with assurances that they are green, also when they are not. Some manufactures simply declare their products as “green” with no objective data referencing to their ecological impact. A “greenwasher” is the market title given to a manufacturer that deliberately claims to be producing green products but knowing they are not. The greenwashing problem has generated an increasing attention among consumers that are aware of the importance in making environmentally correct purchasing decisions. Consumers have a way to guide their purchasing actions and enterprises have a way to communicate to the market place a correct information that their products meet environmental good performance or standards: the eco-labels. The problem is, how can we determine what organization is behind all the possible eco-labels?
