It is a shaped Copper ring, that goes over a pipe, to be inserted in the housing of a Compression fitting, and then tightened by the fitting's nut, by screwing on the fitting. This action puts pressure on the 'olive' to deform and bind tightly to the pipe, so that the pressure of the system liquid does not loosen the pipe to leave the fitting. By the nature, in other words, of the olive and its malleability, the pipe is held fast, if pressure acts on it. |
