I am being perfectly serious. The examples I gave you simply support the fact that although the name 'legal pad' used to apply only to certain types of notebook, with definite specifications, 120 years ago, the term now applies to virtually every type of ruled notepad or notebook. Many people agree with me on this. Are you trying to say that only you are correct and that all the rest of us are wrong?

Take another example. The operating licence that a London taxi driver must obtain is called a hackney carriage licence and London black taxis are officially called Hackney carriages (see: http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/medical/taxi.aspx & http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/browse/business/licensing/lice...
But a hackney carriage was originally a horse drawn taxi that started operating in 1662 and you would now be incorrect to restrict the term ‘hackney carriage’ to mean solely ‘a carriage for hire that is drawn by a horse’.

As you know, rubber boots are commonly called ‘wellingtons’ or ‘wellington boots’ by English speaking people in many countries, and if you were being asked to provide the English language equivalent of the Greek work ‘γαλότσες’, you wouldn’t be incorrect to describe them as being ‘wellingtons’ or ‘wellington boots’, despite the fact that, ‘The Wellington boot is a type of boot based upon leather Hessian boots. They were worn and popularised by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. This novel "Wellington" boot became a staple of hunting and outdoor wear for the British aristocracy in the early 19th century’ (please see:

Granted, but things have changed since 1888. For instance, see the legal pads offered by Rymans in the UK at: http://www.ryman.co.uk/search-page/?term=legal pad, and go to Google, select images, write legal pad in the search box and then tell me if all of the pads that are shown comply with the specifications you give in your example. The fact of the matter is that, in the past 120 years since the days of Thomas Holley, the term ‘legal pad’ has come to mean a notebook with lined pages and has become completely synonymous with the word notebook and you would now be incorrect to restrict the term ‘legal pad’ to mean only the type of notebooks described in your discussion entry.

According to legend, Thomas W. Holley of Holyoke, Massachusetts invented the legal pad around the year 1888 when he innovated the idea to collect all the sortings, various sort of substandard paper scraps from various factories, and stitch them together in order to sell them as pads at an affordable and fair price. In about 1900, the latter then evolved into the modern legal pad when a local judge requested for a margin to be drawn on the left side of the paper. This was the first legal pad.[4]

The only technical requirement for this type of stationery to be considered a true "legal pad" is that it must have margins of 1.25 inches (3.17 centimeters) from the left edge of legal pad. Here, the margin, also known as down lines,[5] is room used to write notes or comments. Legal pads usually have a gum binding at the top as opposed to a spiral or stitched binding.
