English term or phrase: professional classes
The term appears in the following sentence:

"Many of the buildings of the period survive, even those thrown up rapidly and imposingly across the suburbs to house the new middle and professional classes."

Can "middle and professional classes" be translated as "Mittel- und Oberschicht" or is "Oberschicht" something completely different than "professional classes"?

Thanks for your help!

Akademiker

Explanation:
The meaning and connotation of "Oberschicht" is (slightly) different than "professional classes". You can belong to the Oberschicht and be wealthy by inheritance, without necessarily being working.
"Professional classes" implies that you have a qualified education (and are working).
Maybe you could translate "to house the new middle and professional classes" like that: "um Wohnraum für Menschen aus den neuen Mittelschichten und Akademiker zu schaffen"

Example sentence(s):
