mir ist nicht ganz klar, was hier mit "codified items" gemeint ist...kann mir jemand weiterhelfen.

You have four types of approvers that apply at:
The purchase request level :
Vertical approver: to apply an approver according to the requester cost center (for codified items the material cost center)
Job approver: you apply an approver according to a “job” attribute informed when doing the purchase request (you can create as much types of purchase requests as you want).
The purchase line level :
Horizontal approver: to apply an approver according to a category of product. When creating the Purchase request, the requester choose a category (automatic for codified items) which have consequence to inform the purchasing account. A category linked to one supplier type (like category 1701: related to building Equipment and account 60685: “Other furniture” etc…)
The product line (for the stocked items) but it is NOT USED

Anhand der Kennziffer kann man z.B. eine Materialart oder Warengruppe ermitteln. Gleichfalls scheint die Eingabe einer Kostenstelle (gilt auch als Kennziffer) möglich zu sein (vertical approver), damit die Zuordnung von Kennziffern zu einer Position erfolgen kann und die Eingaben korrekt im System hinterlegt sind.
"items" kann man im Materialmgmt. z. B. auch mit "Artikeln" übersetzen, "Position" ist aber unverfänglicher, denn es muss sich nicht bei allen Beschaffungsanforderungen zwangsläufig um konkrete "Artikel/Waren" handeln.

Das "codified" halte ich hier für einen unglücklichen Sprachstil. Man verschlüsselt hier nichts, gemeint ist eher, dass es einen Kennziffernschlüssel (= eine eindeutige Kennziffer je Position) gibt, der eine einfache/genaue Zuordnung im System ermöglicht.
