Ich bin mir sicher, dass es sich hier um einen Schereibfehler handelt. Meines Erachtens ist hier "fief" gemeint, also "Lehen". "Fife" gibt es zwar auch, machT es in diesem Zusammenhang gar keinen Sinn.

I think "fife" is being used very loosely in your text.

Im Laufe seiner Geschichte erfuhr Fife kaum Gebietsänderungen, sondern hauptsächlich Änderungen seines verwaltungstechnischen Status. Fife ist eine der 34 traditionellen Grafschaften Schottlands, war ab 1889 eine Verwaltungsgrafschaft, ab 1975 eine Region und seit 1996 eine unitary authority.
