English term or phrase: manspreading
Definition from Oxford:
The practice whereby a man, especially one traveling on public transportation, adopts a sitting position with his legs wide apart, in such a way as to encroach on an adjacent seat or seats.

Example sentence(s):
  • A student has faced an "unpleasant backlash" over her award-winning chair designed to stop "manspreading". BBC News
  • Anna Dovgalyuk, 20, has started splashing a mixture of water and bleach on the groins of men with their legs spread too far on the St Petersberg metro. The law student embarked on the one-woman crusade to stop manspreading and has accused men in her native Russia of "gender aggression" but says the country is not doing enough the tackle the problem. The Sun
  • Whilst it's most certainly not the politest of ways to sit oneself, does the act of manspreading really legitimise anybody to define space as “inherently gendered”, as Mic subsequently did? Is it actually a case of men monopolising a woman’s space out of intrinsic entitlement? Or does science play a bigger part than we might think? Independent

manspreading (France), étalement masculin (France + Canada)

Definition from Le Monde:

Example sentence(s):
- Radio Canada

Notes to answerer
Martin Dufresne I pity the tendency of most French speakers to simply adopt an English neologism (for wokeness points), especially when creative solutions can be and are crafted in the French canon. Another deporable and well-acknowledged tendency of translators is that of sacrificing the political edge of an English neologism by settling for a flat description.

  -> Merci

No  Martin Dufresne: "Étalement masculin" loses much of the irony involved in "manspreading", and the focus on the body parts being spread. This term could be read as referring to the distribution of males in a region. Nice try. The French have already found something better

  -> While researching the term, I have found that "manspreading" is used in France, while Canadians prefer to try and explain the term. I could not find a French universally accepted equivalent, but I noticed "étalement masculin" in several reputable papers.

No  Lorraine Dubuc: Les hommes aux jambes bien écartées. https://www.ghanima.org/langage-corporel-des-jambes-position...

  -> This is a possible description of the English term. However, unlike the use of the English term "manspreading", it does not return many results in French resources.

Definition from LCI:

Example sentence(s):
