or, depending of how you worded the rest, you could keep the imperative, as this ST is a list of instructions

"error out" is an instruction/command, a phrasal verb used in imperative mode

  -> look at whole context// "error out" IS here used as a phrasal verb coined for the occasion, I'm 100% sure of that.
agree  Simon Mac: I would agree that "error out of programming mode" here almost certainly means "leave programming mode with an error message". There is however a possibility there is not supposed to be an interactive error message, just an error state or status.

disagree  Daryo: "error out" is used as a phrasal verb, not as a noun // it's not "an error that occurred while exiting the programming mode" it's "get out of the programming mode and display an error message" ('cos you can't delete what's not there to be deleted)
