Please see the meaning of statistic as a singular noun: http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/statistic Here it means "an example or an instance" of something...so a "nonsurvival statistic" means an example/instance of something/someone that did not survive...and "nonsurvival" does not necessarily "died"...it can also mean "was not successful" As an example: Joe was a nonsurvival statistic in the marathon. This doesn't mean that Joe died.
