crazy wisdom heilige gekte Explanation: Uit een artikel over 'On the road' van Jack Kerouac, geschreven door Roel Bentz van den Berg (NRC Handelsblad, 24-12-'96 - internetreferentie): 'A new kind of American Saint', noemde Kerouac zijn snelwegsuperheld, vanwege de waanzinnige energie waarmee Neal Cassady het leven te lijf ging en de toewijding waarmee hij zijn vervreemding in vervoering wist om te zetten. "The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything, but burn burn burn ...", zo staat het in On The Road - maar ondertussen werd hij er wel doodmoe van, Kerouac. Na elke trip met Cassady moest hij zich een maandje terugtrekken op een bergtop, in Mexico City, bij een vriendin, of - steeds weer en steeds meer - bij zijn moeder ('mijn tante' in On The Road). Zij moest niets hebben van het gezelschap waarin haar zoon verkeerde, en eigenlijk kon ik daar wel inkomen. Als ik er goed over nadacht, had ik zelf ook niet zo veel op met die Dean/Neal. Met al zijn bovenmenselijke vermogens en niets ontziende geestdrift had hij tegelijk ook iets hols en ongrijpbaars, en zijn door Kerouac zo bewonderde *heilige gekte* verkeerde in de jaren zestig in zelf-parodie toen hij zich achter het stuur zette van de Furthur, de psychedelisch beschilderde bus waarmee schrijver Ken Kesey en zijn clubje proto-hippies, The Merry Pranksters, trippend door het land trokken. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 19 hrs (2006-12-31 11:25:42 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Ah, misschien zit ik er dan naast. Uit een bespreking van Feuersteins boek dacht ik op te kunnen maken dat de twee termen naar hetzelfde verwijzen: The spiritual approach known as "crazy wisdom" or "holy madness" is the most radical orientation to enlightenment there is. Few other subjects in the history of religion and spirituality have provoked more controversy. This book brilliantly elaborates why. Holy Madness introduces numerous colourful spiritual eccentrics, past and present, famous and infamous. But Georg Feuerstein does a great deal more than tell fascinating stories about crazy-wise adepts from Hinduism, Buddhism, Sufism, Judaism, Christianity, and the so-called "new religions". Like an archaeologist, he rigorously exposes the core of the spiritual process, focussing on initiation, discipleship, the path, the nature of enlightenment, the authenticity of teachings and teachers, and not least the narrow line between radical spirituality, mental health, and sound morality.
