The Federal Trade Commission, the nation’s chief privacy policy and enforcement agency for 40 years, issued a preliminary staff report today that proposes a framework to balance the privacy interests of consumers with innovation that relies on consumer information to develop beneficial new products and services. The proposed report also suggests implementation of a “Do Not Track” mechanism – likely a persistent setting on consumers’ browsers – so consumers can choose whether to allow the collection of data regarding their online searching and browsing activities.

Nearly two years after the Obama administration, digital advertisers, browser makers and privacy advocates agreed in principle to create a "Do Not Track" mechanism for Web browsing, the various parties still have not agreed on a basic framework for the tool. (...)

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which is moderating this increasingly fractious and seemingly endless debate, said that it has chosen a foundation upon which all other discussions about Do Not Track will be based.

All the group needs to do now is hammer out 25 major disagreements about that foundation's "base text," including what kinds of data can be collected, how advertisers can identify users, how users' information is stored, and the very the definition of the word "tracking." No biggie.

Choosing a framework might technically constitute a step forward for Do Not Track, but the reality is that the besieged tool is no closer to seeing the light of day.

Do Not Track (DNT) is a way to keep users’ online behavior from being followed across the Internet by behavioral advertisers, analytics companies, and social media sites. It combines both technology (a way to let users signal whether they want to be tracked) as well as a policy framework for how companies should respond to that signal.

do not track framework
volg-me-niet-functie

Explanation:

Do Not Track framework - 'beleidskader (oid) voor de volg-mij-niet-functie'
