梵名Revata 。(一)又作离越多、隶婆哆、哩缚帝、离婆、离曰、离越,或颉离伐多、褐丽筏多。意译常作声、所供养、金、室星、适时。佛弟子之一,为舍利弗之弟。常坐禅入定,心无错乱。因其父母祈离婆多星而得,故取此名。曾遭雨而止宿神祠,至深夜见有二鬼争尸而食,乃思人身之虚幻。复诣佛所,闻人身由四大假和合之理,遂出家入道。后游行陀婆国,遇寒雪,因无著革屣,脚为之冻伤;佛赞其少欲知足,尔后听许于寒地得着富罗(短靴)或革屣等。[中阿含经卷八、增一阿含经卷三弟子品、佛本行集经卷四十七、五分律卷二十一、法华文句卷二、玄应音义卷六、卷二十二、慧琳音义卷八、卷二十三、卷二十六]

【离婆多】 (人名)Revata,又云梨婆多,离越,离曰。罗汉名。正云颉隶伐多。二十八宿中室宿之名。祈星而得之子也。或名假和合。彼遇二鬼争尸,悟人身假和合之理而为出家得道之因缘也。法华文句二曰:‘离婆多亦云离越,此翻星宿或室宿,或假和合。文殊问经云常作声,父母从星辰乞子,既其感获,因星作名。’玄应音义六曰:‘离婆多,案文殊问经云:此译云室星,则北方宿也。祠之得子,仍以名焉。正言颉隶伐多,经中作梨婆多,或作黎离多,讹也。即首楞严经中坐禅第一如离婆多者是也。颉音贤结切。’ 中华佛教百科全书 对“离婆多”解释如下:
【离婆多】
(梵Revata,巴Revata,藏Nam-gru)
佛弟子。系舍利弗之弟。又作离越多、隶婆哆、隶跋多、梨波多、哩■帝、离婆、离曰、离越、丽越,或颉离伐多、颉隶伐多、颉戾茷多、褐丽筏多。意译常作声、所供养、金、室星或适时。据《佛本行集经》卷四十七〈舍利目连因缘品〉记载,师为摩诃陀国王舍城外那罗陀(Na^lada)村大婆罗门之子,为舍利弗之弟。由于其父母祈祷离婆多星而得生,故名离婆多。

关于师出家之因缘,佛典中之说法,并不一致。《法句经注》(Dhammapada-at!t!ha-katha^)载,师年长将欲婚娶,当他到岳家时,忽然感受到人身之终将老衰,遂于归途访精舍而出家学道,后入佉弥啰(Khadira)林止住,终于证得阿罗汉果。此外,《大智度论》谓师曾为避雨而止宿于神祠,深夜见有二鬼争食人尸,因而感受到人身之虚幻。遂造访佛所,闻佛开示。始悉人身为四大假和而成,因而出家入道。

此外,《五分律》卷二十一载,师曾游行至陀婆国,遇寒雨而不着革屣,其足部乃因而冻伤。其时,佛赞叹师能少欲知足,乃准许此后得于寒国穿富罗、着革屣。

师颇好禅定,《中阿含》卷四十八〈牛角沙罗林经〉云(大正1·728b)︰‘离越哆比丘常乐坐禅。’《增一阿含经》卷三〈弟子品〉云(大正2·557b)︰‘坐禅入定,心不错乱,所谓离曰比丘是。’可知师确以禅定而知名于时。
