Similar to the International Monetary Fund’s forecasts last month, the organisation expects the US economy to improve from a growth rate of 1.9 per cent in 2013 to 3.5 per cent in 2015. It says eurozone growth rates over the same three-year period will accelerate from< a contraction of 0.4 per cent to a rise of 1.7 per cent next year>.Sentence or paragraph where the term occurs, type of document (legal document, formal letter, etc.), target audience, source and target country, dialects, etc.


The article was posted in Financial Times yesterday. I am not sure about the meaning of “a contraction of 0.4 per cent to a rise of 1.7 per cent next year”. My understanding is:

Taking the growth rate of 2012 as a benchmark and supposing it was 1 per cent, the growth rate of eurozone in 2013 contracted by 0.4 per cent to 0.6 per cent and is expected to rise by 1.7 per cent to 2.7 per cent.
