Since the late 1980s, DNA testing has proved effective in tracking down and arresting criminals. Now it is being used to track down poachers and others who prey on endangered wildlife.
In 2002, officials in Singapore seized 6.5 tons (5.9 metric tons) of illegal elephant ivory. The shipment included more than 500 whole tusks, many over 6 feet (2 m) long. Over 40,000 thumb-sized ivory signature seals, valued at more than $8 million, made up the rest of the shipment.
