Когато посоката, в която трептят частиците на средата е перпендикулярна на посоката, в която се предават трептенията от частица на частица, казваме, че вълната е напречна вълна. Надлъжни вълни са, например, звуковите вълни, а напречни - вълните върху водна повърхност или вълните върху трептяща струна.
