congratulations! Abhinandan! Explanation: অভিনন্দন! Congratulation! You are the Winner= Abhinandan! apni-i bijoyee.=অভিনন্দন! আপনিই বিজয়ী। Congratulation for 5th marriage anniversary =Pancham bibaaha baarsheekeete Abhinandan=পঞ্চম বিবাহবার্ষিকীতে অভিনন্দন Congratulation for your success = apnaar safalataar jonya Abhinandan= আপনার সফলতার জন্য অভিনন্দন। And in all occassion it is used for congratulation. Although there is another word in Bengali is 'Nandan'(নন্দন),but it is not used so much. |

congratulations! Congratulations! Explanation: I think words like 'congratulations', 'thank you', 'excuse me' and 'sorry' become part of Bengali language and culture, particularly in urban areas. If the situation is interpreting environment, I think you need not go for translation, you can simply convey the meaning to the target persons saying: tara apnake/tomake congratulate koreche (they congratulated you). I would even go for a transliteration of the word in certain cases while translating. Example: Buddy won the game! Congratulations! bandhu tumi jite gechho! Congratulations! |

congratulations! শাবাশ! Explanation: অভিনন্দন cannot be used with an exclamation mark and must always be used with the verb জানানো or with a subject such as আপনাকে, তোমাকে, তোমাদের, etc. Hence, the best word that comes closest to meaning according Samarth Shabdokosh - Sahitya Sangsad, Kolkata - to avinandan which is otherwise the best word for congratulations when it is not used in an exclamatory context, and, which can also be used with an exclamation mark is shabash! -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 days17 hrs (2007-03-07 14:43:20 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- The term accepted here and granted 2 Kudoz points is "Abhinondon!" which is patently incorrect grammatically and from usage point of view since the word "abhinondon" cannot be used with an exclamation mark on a stand-alone basis and still be a grammatically correct sentence (please check any standard Bengali to Bengali dictionary). The English sentence:"Congratulations!" is, however, a grammatically correct sentence, or, perhaps, more correctly, allowable sentence fragment, especially in film/play scripts, reported speech, marketing brochures, novels and short stories and other such similar contexts/documents. Hence, to (a) correctly translate a correct English sentence fragment into a grammatically acceptable Bengali sentence fragment, (b) retain the nuance and flavour, and (c) as Chowdhury Saheb has pointed out in his comment, retain the "bhetorgoto artho ba uchchhash", we have to look for a word which is closest in meaning and yet can be used with an exclamation mark. The only such word in Bengali is "shabash!". So I was sure I was correct when I proposed it and I am more than 100 per cent sure now just as I am equally sure that what has been accepted and granted kudoz points is incorrect. Now that someone has seconded my view, I am requesting for and inviting a general debate so that only correct terms get into the glossary irrespective of who gets the kudoz points. Knowledge, I am sure, all will agree, is greater than the individual. Another Related Issue: All English to Bengali dictionaries have only one entry against the word congratulations and that is abhinondon. So, some answerers were confused whether this question deserved a pro category rating. I think it did because the standard English to Bengali dictionaries do not address the question of what happens when as a translator you come across a situation where the English version reads"Congratulations!" period! The easy way out taken by some of our colleagues of just adding an exclamation mark to the dictionary word abhinondon is clearly not the solution. The questioner has in fact made this clear in her additional comment and yet "abhinondon!" has been accepted as correct. I assume that the questioner knew that the easy solution by the book was incorrect and therefore it had be thrown open to the community. I would like others to comment on this too. Pro question or not? And what is the questioner's views on this, please? Example sentence(s):
