The word "point" in this context reflects a relatively modern usage commonly found in the sciences, both physical and behavioral/social. Among the many instances of this specific usage that we encounter everyday are such common expressions as "freezing point," "boiling point," "condensation point," "breaking point," "combustion point," "point of no return," "point of departure," "point in time," etc.

In all of these instances, the common Arabic equivalent is نقطة. Every fairly literate Arabic reader understands what the word means. It does not refer to a physical dot on a page, but rather to a point on a continuum at which a certain event takes place. The word translates perfectly between the two languages (and many other languages as well). There is nothing to be gained by departing from this well-established correspondence.
