| Reference: why 'step down' Reference information: About ACRO (=Association of Criminal Records Office) ACRO Criminal Records Office is a national police unit working for safer communities. A leader in the field of criminal records and biometric information, we provide a range of services that deliver operational benefits to law enforcement and public protection teams, help bring offenders to justice and meet the legitimate information access and management needs of the public. ACRO was founded in 2006 as the ACPO Criminal Records Office following a decision by the then Association of Chief Police Officers. The aim was to establish an operationally focussed unit to organise the management of criminal records information and improve the links between criminal records and biometric information. https://www.acro.police.uk/about_us.aspx ACRO issues Police Certificates to people who want to emigrate to, or obtain a visa for, countries including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Cayman Islands, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States of America. The certificate details whether or not the applicant has a criminal record in the United Kingdom and is required as part of the visa process by the respective high commission or embassy. Please note that the certificate may also include foreign criminal history information where it has been disclosed to the UK. Certificates are prepared in accordance with the ACRO step-down model. These guidelines do not apply to Scottish convictions. Please note that Police Certificates will contain impending prosecutions and offences that are under investigation. Police Certificates will only be provided in a physical format and we are unable to discuss the content of the certificate until you have received it. The Police Certificate is not intended for use to gain employment within the UK or to emigrate to the UK. https://www.acro.police.uk/police_certificates.aspx Offences are stepped down after a set time period whilst taking into account the seriousness of the offence, the age of the subject when the offence was committed, the outcome and the sentence imposed. In addition impending prosecutions and current investigations are also published, although a certificate can be re-issued once the outcome is known.
