De r is technisch gezien een van de moeilijkere klanken. Er zijn twee manieren om een r uit te spreken:
- de huig-r wordt gemaakt in de keel,
- de rollende r met de tongpunt.

In het Nederlands maakt het geen verschil of een woord nu met een huig-r of een tongpunt-r uitgesproken wordt. In het Spaans daarentegen, heeft een zelfde woord soms een andere betekenis, afhankelijk van de uitspraak van de r. De r kan niet alleen op veel verschillende manieren worden uitgesproken, in sommige posities is de r lastiger dan in andere. Meestal slagen kinderen er eerst in om de rgoed te zeggen in groepjes van medeklinkers, zoals in brood, praten en drinken. In regen of rood lukt het dan nog niet.
In het algemeen wordt aangenomen dat een kind van vijf de meeste klanken goed uitspreekt. De r is daar een uitzondering op. Velel kinderen hebben er in de basisschool dan ook nog af en toe moeite mee. Vooral de r aan het einde van een onbeklemtoonde lettergreep, zoals in luier en wakkerblijft lang moeilijk.
