systeemvaart shift work Explanation: Perhaps not specific enough, but the general concept seems to be one of "shift work". -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 51 mins (2016-10-21 12:20:04 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- "Shift work—background Work patterns offshore vary both in overall duration and in internal structure. An offshore ‘tour’ (total time offshore in one stretch) may be 7, 14 or 21 days, while shift patterns of, for example, 14 days, 14 nights, 7 nights followed by 7 days (7N/7D) and 7 days followed by 7 nights (7D/7N) are all encountered [2–4]. The pattern may vary from operator to operator, from platform to platform and may depend on the type of work performed, e.g. maintenance, control room operator and driller. Time off tour at home also varies. Two weeks on and 2 weeks off are probably most frequent in the UK sector, but in the Norwegian sector, 2 weeks on (i.e. offshore at work) and 3 weeks off (at home) are also found [3]." Reference: refs Reference information: some more info on what it means: "1. Reference: systematic sailing Reference information: Here they went about it like this: World Conference on Transport Research - WCTR 2016 Shanghai. 10-15 July 2016 The inland waterway transport sector in Western Europe is a competitive market with an excess of supply over demand. Overcapacity puts pressure on prices, and has caused a decline in profitability, particularly since the economic crisis of 2008. In this competitive environment, it is crucial for ship owners to have accurate information on the cost of their service in order to avoid setting freight rates at non-profitable levels. For this reason, an instrument to calculate the cost of inland waterway transport is being developed. Another important parameter on the second input form on exploitation concerns payment of the crew according to systematic sailing. This refers to an alternative remuneration scheme, applicable for crews who do not only work but also live on the ship. In these cases, crew members work on an ‘on/off’-basis, and have an equal amount of working and resting days on board, resulting in an overall increase of the number of working and resting hours (BTB, 2013c). Special tariffs exist for crew members sailing on a systematic basis. In such cases, the personnel does not only work on the ship, but lives there as well. (BTB, 2013c). Table 3.
