Dutch term or phrase:veiligheidsfunctie
The text I am translating refers to people with a "veiligheidsfunctie" on a train. They include drivers, guards, ticket staff etc. I am struggling a bit with. My translation - security job - does not cover it in my view, as it has connotations with security guards and people protecting things or persons, while this job is broader and includes train drivers etc. They have to do a psychological and physical test for a "veiligheidsfunctie". Does anyone have a better idea?

still twijfeling about the diff. btwn task and role, as it seems a role can include/cover tasks, but I like “safety-critical”

just came across this term again in a text I am currently translating and I'm pretty sure you are reading this wrong, and that it is indeed about a person performing a job with particular safety responsibilities, rather than operating some kind of actual device
who are operating some sort of safety function, not people who have one. And not necessarily on the train itself. and must be dense not to see how people with a veiligheidsfunctie on a train differ from people without a veiligheidsfunctie on the same train. Who can possibly the latter be? (Passengers and guide dogs excluded, of course).
The problem with something like "staff with a safety function" (which I assume is how Andrew's answer would be used in WH's text) is that it might imply that that's these people's main role: safety. However, this is clearly not the case. Safety is merely one of their duties. Hence, freek's suggestion ("employee with safety responsibilities") makes more sense, as it is less restrictive in this regard.
Your logic may be superior (although I still prefer freek's employee with safety responsibilities), but I'd need to see some source text before I'd feel happy clicking on Agree.
PS: "train functionaries"? How about staff/employees?
Michael, if you read the posting properly you will see that WH states "people with a veiligheidsfunctie. That is grammatically different from your/Freeks "performing etc etc. Hence my very logical conclusion. There is no point in trying to invent things that aren't there.
an explanation in English is nice but in order to understand what the problem actually is, it would be helpful to see the actual Dutch and how it's used in context. On the face of it, it's hard to fathom what the difficulty could possibly be.

Explanation: This strikes me as the most logical translation. All of the functionaries that you list are responsible in one way or another for ensuring safety on trains is maintained.
