Generally, more than two settling tanks are present and located on a ship as part of the bulkhead of the engine room. Oil from the bunker tank is transferred into the settling tank. settling tank = fuel tank provided in machinery space of motor vessel to separate water contaminants from fuel oil by gravity; heating of fuel oil by steam heating coils helps to accelerate the separation process; usually designed with a capacity not less than 12 hours fuel consumption (see service tank)

service tank = fuel tank provided in machinery space of motor vessel from which main engine directly draws its daily fuel consumption; heating of fuel oil by steam heating coils serves to maintain the fuel at working temperature; usually its fuel is continuously fed from purifier taking suction from the settling tank; use of purifier helps to accelerate the separation of water and solid contaminants by centrifugal force from the fuel

It seems there are quite a few different kinds of 'wierbak':

wierbak (wierpot*, wierkast*, zeekast*, slikkast*, slibkast*, filterbak*) = in de aanzuigleiding van het koelwatersysteem opgenomen 'vat' met daarin een zeef, die tot doel heeft, het grofste vuil tegen te houden. Mogelijk ook koelwaterfilter.

~ wierpot = kleine ronde wierbak
~ wierkast = grote wierbak, meestal met meerdere aansluitingen. Vergelijk: zeekast.
~ zeekast = soort kleine bun tegen de kim van het schip in de machinekamer, gekoppeld aan een verdeelkast met kranen, die het mogelijk maakt aanzuigleidingen van koel- en lenswater op willekeurige wijze met koel- en lenswaterpompen te verbinden.
~ slikkast = minder gebruikelijk synoniem voor wierbak.
~ slibkast = niet echt bekend. Mogelijk hetzelfde als een wierbak.
~ filterbak = ongebruikelijk synoniem voor wierbak.
~ koelwaterfilter = niet voldoende bekend. Waarschijnlijk een wierbak. Mogelijk een wierbak met een fijne zeef of de zeef zelf.

IATE calls it a 'mud box' or 'mud collector':
