Dutch to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Other
Dutch term or phrase:Kerst van stal
Anybody got a suggestion for this please? Seems to be a somewhat secular/pagan/Christian smorgasbord of Christmas thingies, no idea what it would be called in English.
This is a bit far fetched but the (lame) Dutch pun inspired me...
Jokes aside, a wordplay on Nativity scene might be an option (if you can think of a better one) as one of the highlights of the exhibition seems to be nativity scenes the world over.
keeping it safe :). I was thinking of the ting that it doesn't only include an exhibition, but also choirs and things, which doesn't really fit with 'exposed', although that would be a really fun title.
Actually to be honest, I don't know if the organisers really get what 'van stal' means, unless I'm wrong about my language. ;)
Alweer voor de 3e keer zal er een “Kerst van Stal” worden gehouden in de Bonifatiuskerk te Lichtenvoorde. Uiteraard zullen de kerstbomen, kerstverlichting, kerststallen en wensbomenbos onderdeel uitmaken van de expositie alsmede een foto expositie van de oudheidkundige vereniging.
De expositie staat in het teken van Kerst over de hele wereld. De op landen geselecteerde kerststallen (van verzamelaars Ben Rouwhorst en Geert Scholten) zijn van een toelichting voorzien hoe in dat betreffende land kerst leeft en gevierd wordt.
Naast de kerststallenexpositie heeft de organisatie de hand weten te leggen op de verzameling van Geert Scholten. De verzameling bestaat uit plm. 1200 engelen in allerlei soorten en maten en samen met de 300 engelen van verzamelaar Ben Rouwhorst, wordt dit waarschijnlijk de grootste engelen tentoonstelling die er in Nederland te zien is.
De expositie wordt aangevuld met meerdere concerten. Op 10 december bij de opening van “Kerst van Stal 2016” geeft het Volendams Opera Koor (toegang € 20,00*) acte de precence met een ruim 2 uur durend concert. Op 14 december zijn we bijzonder trots
van stal halen. So, "dig out good old Christmas again". or "Let's get Christmas out again", "Lets get going with Christmas again". Or something similar.... Not yet in Christmas mood!
The only thing that comes to mind is a Flemish expression 'van stal halen' which means kind of take something long-forgotten or long stored away (with a big layer of dust on top) to use it again. Like a plastic Christmas tree 'van stal halen': it's been in the loft since last year, but now it's X-mas again. If you see what I mean. Or a grandma or grandpa who take the old toys from their son or daughter 'van stal' so their grandchild can use them.
It would obviously also be a pun on the stable with the baby Jesus, but you probably got that.
Explanation: would be an option, as it refers to more than just the Christmas stable. I would keep it near to the Christmas story as it is an exposition in a church.

Explanation: It's impossible to literally capture/re-use the wordplay used in the Dutch exhibition title (allusion to 'kerststal' and 'iets van stal halen') in English.
That being said, I think using 'out of the box' might be an alternative solution here.
Christmas decorations such as nativity scenes, tree decorations, lights etc. are often stored away in boxes until it's time to take them out of their boxes again in the weeks before Christmas. At the same time, 'out of the box' also alludes to the fact that the exhibition offers visitors a different view of Christmas by showing nativity scenes from all over the world.

Explanation: Choice of "Christmas" vs. "holiday" is one of culture, country & marketing, but I'm pretty confident "extravaganza" will cover the "van stal" bit.
You can also get away with calling it a "bonanza" instead of "extravaganza", especially if anything will ever be sold at any point (baked goods, hot cocoa, trinkets, face painting, etc.)
I think they'll both get the same idea across in terms of "a whole lot of Christmas stuff going on", but religious people may read more into "bonanza".
