I understand, perhaps incorrectly, 'drivable' to mean something like 'you can sit ('stand' is an option as well) on/in it and drive it'.

1.Capable of being driven (as a vehicle).
2.Capable of being driven on safely or successfully (as a road or other surface).

My understanding also implies that I don't consider 'self-propelled equipment/machinery' to be 'drivable', at least they are not necessarily so.

My questions:

1) Does 'rijdende werktuigen' always refer to 'drivable' ? If you look at the word, you would wonder why.
If 'rijdende werktuigen' also refers to the 'forklifts / lift trucks' below, then, it would seem to me, 'drivable' as a translation is no option, since these are not 'drivable'.

2) If 'rijdende werktuigen' alsways refer to 'drivable', then does this specific category of drivables also exists abroad? And if it does, then how would you call this specific category?

The forklifts / lift trucks which are designated as 'wheeled equipment' in the first link directly below would also qualify as 'rijdende werktuigen' (and more specifically as 'interntransportmiddelen'), at least so in the Netherlands. See my reference comment.

Basically, under Dutch law, the 'rijdende werktuigen' category of vehicles covers all types of drivable/mobile industrial, agricultural, forestry and engineering/construction equipment which is not primarily designed for transportation of people and/or goods.

Loading and unloading of goods (by lift trucks etc.) is not considered transportation. Also, 'primarily designed for' is considered something different from 'used as/for'.

I think not all 'wheeled equipment/machinery' is necessarily 'drivable equipment/machinery'

unless it's messy, belgian shorthand for "verrijdbaar" (i.e. wheeled, rolling, on wheels, mobile, on castors)

Although "ride-on/drivable equipment" sounds perfectly plausible to me too.

I would not agree with


1. mobile/movable equipment (it moves)
2. motorised equipment (it's got an engine)

Since these types of equipment don't necessarily 'rijden'

3. ride-on/drivable equipment (you can ride on/drive it)

Note also that certain examples of 2. and 3. would be contained in 1.

Given that it is a "Belgian company that makes roofs, facades and walls.", I suspect that we are dealing with 1. Can't be sure of course.

I found 1, which would seem to indicate that these things (at least the ones in this one ref) have engines (thus, "motorised equipment"):

I think in a safety context such as yours this would be quite a safe solution as it would cover all manner of … mobile equipment.

I think it's probably synonymous with "verplaatsbare/mobiele werktuigen".
