public service / public institution Explanation: I'd have to disagree with the discussion that there is a not an official equivalent. public service corporations/companies maintain the same function as an ION (and also referred to as a public utility company) when it comes to certain services. Even though you may see variations across the board, there are official dictionary definitions (see below) that maintain this terminology, even though it can be conflated with "utilities" (in the sense of "voorzieningen" - water, gas, electricity provided by a "nutsbedrijf"). Google Dictionary defines it as follows: pub·lic-serv·ice cor·po·ra·tion noun noun: public-service corporation; plural noun: public-service corporations - a public utility. Business Dictionary defines it as follows: "Privately or publicly held firm organized to provide a particular public service such as communications, electricity, gas, or water. Wikipedia expounds upon this further, as follows: "a corporation or other non-governmental business entity (i.e. limited partnership) which delivers public services - certain services considered essential to the public interest." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_service_company Black's Law Dictionary states the following: "Those whose operations serve the needs of the general public or conduce to the comfort and convenience of an entire community, such as railroads, gas, water, and electric light companies.
