Dutch term or phrase: de haakjes vinden
Hi - could anyone shed some light on this phrase? It seems to be a metaphor, "to sift through to find" perhaps. It appears in the following:

Zover ik heb begrepen is er een lang proces achter de rug met betrekking tot de strategische keuzes van XXXX. In die periode was het soms lastig de haakjes te vinden waar je op 1 lijn met elkaar zit. Anderzijds gaf dit de medewerkers van XXXXX en mijzelf ook wat ruimte om zelf op zoek te gaan naar de verbinding.

Thanks for your help!

agree  philgoddard: I think it's probably something like this, but I couldn't find references.//Yes, OK.

-> Does it sound acceptable to your English ears? // Thank you for LMK!

agree  Tina Vonhof (X): Maybe just 'points/areas of consensus'. It's a rare expression - it would not be easy to find references with a similar meaning.
50 mins
-> Thank you, Tina. Or: actual points/areas of consensus ? It's definitely idiosyncratic, 'freewheeling' use of the Dutch language.

After listening to what she said, if you read between the lines, you can begin to see what she really means. Don't believe every thing you read literally. Learn to read between the lines.

read between the lines

Usage notes: sometimes used without the verb: Leo read Melodie's letter again, hoping for some hidden message between the lines.

read between the lines
Perceive or detect a hidden meaning, as in They say that everything's fine, but reading between the lines I suspect they have some marital problems . This term comes from cryptography, where in one code reading every second line of a message gives a different meaning from that of the entire text. [Mid-1800s]
