Pig is the same thing as a scraper.

Since this term is unfindable online except for some almost obscure document and then only in part, it is now also sufficiently clear that it is not certain that it is a GOOD/CORRECT term!

Perhaps it is the result of translating it to Flemish from English and not making a proper/good job of it, even if it was adopted somewhere in some official document, that does not guarantee that the source in Belgium in Flemish was correct, I've seen this often enough at all levels in both Dutch and English.

Peoples have built entire bastardised forms of a language from, in parts, an incorrect understanding of the original, I see it a lot on Dutch government sites where they've let an in-house person translate from their native language (Dutch) into English, this is clear from mistakes like joining up words all the time to form one whacking big long one.

Although I understand now why they call it a 'kolf', it is now also sufficiently clear that 'PIG' must be part of the term.

It just goes to show that knowledge comes before translation.

Sinces pigs can be used for various kinds of pipeline maintenance, I guess 'scraper pig' would be correct. Further context could render the 'scraper' bit superfluous however.

yes, I understand that, Andre, and I saw it at Jacks reference site but there do exist PIGs that are exclusively used for scraping/cleaning and AS this one is called a schraapkolf ....

Pigging in the context of pipelines refers to the practice of using pipeline inspection gauges or 'pigs' to perform various maintenance operations on a pipeline. This is done without stopping the flow of the product in the pipeline.

These operations include but are not limited to cleaning and inspecting of the pipeline. This is accomplished by inserting the pig into a 'pig launcher' (or 'launching station') - a funnel shaped Y section in the pipeline. The launcher / launching station is then closed and the pressure driven flow of the product in the pipeline is used to push it along down the pipe until it reaches the receiving trap – the 'pig catcher' (or receiving station).

The purpose of a pig launcher or receiver is to introduce or retrieve pigs, spheres or inspection tools from a pipeline. Launchers and receivers are built to suit the specific requirements of a pipeline.

I don't agree with Terry's assumption but he can still be right as far as his suggested translation is concerned.

'schraapkolfontvanginstallatie' can be split up into 'schraapkolf' and 'ontvanginstallatie' (receiver system)

I mean to say a 'schraapkolfontvanginstallatie' may be written as a 'ontvanginstallatie met een schraapkolf'

Terry's translation suggestion gave me an idea, which led to another assumption, this is:

a 'schraapkolf' may mean a 'kolf'-shaped scraper
you could argue mentioning the shape of the scraper in not too relevant
then you end up with:

scraper receiver system / receiver system with a ('kolf'-shaped) scraper

'kolf' cannot refer to 'ontvang' in the word 'schraapkolfontvanginstallatie'

apart from this 'schraapkolf' DOES occur as a word on its own
see my DEFINITION of 'schraapkolfstation' , this is the best information we have so far:

schraapkolfstation: plaats op de leiding waar een schraapkolf, die ondermeer gebruikt wordt voor interne controle en reiniging van de leiding, in of uit de leiding kan gebracht worden

This is a tough one, Andre. You may have to query your client on this, or perhaps contact a company working in this field. In my experience, most companies are quite prepared to help in terminology issues, even if they have nothing to do with your project or client.

schraap => scraper; kolf => butt / shank / retort; ontvanginstallatie probaly = receiver / receiving adapter.

A few attempts on UK Google did not deliver anything useable. Maybe you try some comginations yourself and see what you get.
