Dutch term or phrase: weefplanten
From a document on plants, flowers and trees for gardens. Certain species of flowering plant are referred to as 'weefplanten'. I have found the following explanation, though this probably shouldn't be taken as a definition and it's possible there's a more formal term in English that doesn't simply adopt the notion of 'weefplanten' as merely some kind of fillers.

I didn’t really take any notice of Hesperis matronalis, or sweet rocket, until I saw it growing in Helen Dillon’s garden a few years ago. She had used the purple form in the same way as Verbena bonariensis – dotted around a border, weaving in and out of other bulbs and perennials as a filler plant.

In tuinboeken en catalogi kom je het woord steeds vaker tegen: weefplant. Met een weefplant bedoelt men een plant die niet op zijn eigen plaats blijft staan maar zich met ranken als tentakels door zijn buren weet te vlechten. Die buren reageren heel verschillend op zo'n invasie; er zijn planten die onmiddellijk het loodje leggen, maar er zijn er ook die een zekere mate van overwoekering wel tolereren. De taak van de tuinier is dan om een labiel evenwicht van co-existentie in stand te houden. Vroeger moest men van die weefplanten niets hebben. Het ideaal in de tuin was een plant met een ordentelijke pol, die in stand werd gehouden door een bufferzone van kale, zwarte grond. Een border was een zee van aarde met eilandjes van planten erin. Maar in de laatste paar decennia is de smaak veranderd. Nu ziet men een border liever als een wandtapijt waarin kleuren en vormen naadloos in elkaar overgaan. En voor een wandtapijt zul je moeten weven; vandaar de opkomst van de weefplant.

De kampioen van de weefplanten is de Geranium, en daarmee bedoel ik niet de geranium van de vensterbank en bloembak, die eigenlijk Pelargonium heet, maar de tuingeranium, de ooievaarsbek. Veel van die tuingeraniums, zoals Geranium pratense, de beemdooievaarsbek, en Geranium psilostemon, een familielid uit de Kaukasus met fel paarsrode bloemen, groeien van nature in hooiland. Ze groeien in hetzelfde tempo omhoog als het omringende gras en ze worden door dat gras overeind gehouden. Zou je dat steunende gras weghalen, dan zouden die planten uit elkaar vallen. En dat is precies wat er in de tuin gebeurt; daar staan die Geraniums niet in het gras zodat ze als een bos mikadostokjes uit elkaar vallen, tenzij je ze klem zet tussen omringende planten.

Dat omvallen moet niet verward worden met weven; zo'n uiteengevallen Geranium kun je maar het beste tot aan de grond toe afknippen; dat gebeurt in het hooiland tenslotte ook als het gras wordt gemaaid. Twee weken na het afknippen is zo'n plant dan al weer uitgegroeid tot een mooie ronde pol.

Een echte wever groeit vanuit één punt, met rankende, liggende stengels die soms wel meer dan 1 meter lang kunnen worden. Geranium 'Ann Folkard', met paarsrode bloemen en de zachtroze Geranium 'Russell Pritchard' zijn geboren wevers; zij zoeken hun weg door en over hun buurplanten zonder ook maar een poging te doen om rechtop te groeien.

Plants form trailing stems of chartreuse-yellow leaves, bearing shocking magenta-pink flowers with a black eye. May be used as a trailing groundcover. Wonderful in pots or tubs. Appreciates cool summer regions, and evenly moist soil. Clumps may be easily divided in early spring.
