Manufacturing / Moravian church in Denmark
Danish term or phrase: sæbesyderi
In connection with a translation concerning the history of the Danish town of Christiansfeld and the Moravian church, which established a colony there in the 18th century, I have not been able to find a satisfactory translation of this word (and several more, which will follow).

Is there any one with a knowledge of the subject area who can assist, please?

I think “soap boilery” conveys the meaning of “sæbesyderi” best (implies the hot process) - the other suggestions are more general...

“Selve sæbesydningen, som processen kaldtes, fandt sted i dybe kedler, hvis nederste del, der kom i berøring med ilden,…” http://www.avjinfo.dk/filer/udgivelser/brancher/41/saebe.pdf (4.1 Sæbesyderier og sæbefabrikker)

“… den fattige lysestøber, sæbesyder Franklin…” http://www.netleksikon.dk/b/be/benjamin_franklin.shtml

“Franklin was a soap boiler and candle maker...” http://www.ebooksread.com/authors-eng/emma-lilian-dana/maker...

Notes to answerer
Asker: What about 'syderi'? I have not been able to find it in any dictionary. Does it simply mean 'maker'? I'm a bit wary about using a translation from a translated site - not knowing who has done the translation.

Asker: Mange tak for dine forslag, Marberg, men jeg har valgt Anna Haxens forslag om "soap boliery", som er bekræftet af Wikipedia.

neutral  David Young (X): Isn't it "sæbes"+"yderi" rather than "sæbe"+"syderi"?

agree  aha: I'm not given to agreeing with answers after having suggested one myself, but now that 'boilery' has come up, I think that is the best solution. To David: Sorry I got your name wrong in my note. Blame it on the singer ...

Explanation:
Seems that "sæbesydning" is the same as "hot process soap making". "Sæbesyderi" refers to the place where the process takes place. AFAIK there is no specifik term for "syderi" in English.

Yeah, I know - specific not specifik ...

Maybe 'soap boilery' is actually the right term her, because it describes the slow heating process used.

Note to Paul: No, It definitely isn't 'sæbes'+'yderi' - cf. Læsø saltsyderi and the 'sydesalt' they make there.
