Thank you all for your contributions. I was in Flensborg yesterday stocking up on some liquid "lækkerier".

I would just go with treat here, but perhaps phrase it a bit differently for the US reader, "choose a (piece of) chocolate or another treat that you like" ('fancy' is more British than US English). Also, I'd choose a good cheese over a sweet treat any day! (unless it's 70% cocoa of course :)

Hate any stinky cheese, but I love mild cheeses, especially a not too old Cheddar. Nice idea with the dates, though, might try that. :)

"One man's meat is another man's poison." I'm a chocoholic too but I also love something like ryebread topped with really ripe gorgonzola and sliced dates (got it in an Italian café near Marble Arch way back). My wife would throw up at the thought, never mind the sight and smell.

Lækkerier are anything that would consider a bit of a treat. What is 'lækkert' to one person would not necessarily be so to another. For instance, I would squirm at being presented with oysters or snails as a 'lækkeri', while others would be thrilled. To me, 'lækkerier' will generally be sweet, preferably involving chocolate! However, they could also be something a bit out of the ordinary, e.g. a spread of savoury dishes at a lunch table.
