English translation:vehicle to move the story forward
Explanation:
e.g. you might translate it along the lines of “… documentary narration… can develop setting for the audience, give essential information and be used as a vehicle to move the story forward”

The Writer's Little Helper: Everything You Need to Know to Write Better and ... By James V Smith Jr:
“To begin, narration is a handy way for the author to give information, create atmosphere, develop setting, and provide data that would take too long to portray in the action of a scene. Like scenes, narration must move the story forward, carrying an audience from one scene to another…
Never use narration in place of significant action that affects a significant character”

This quote describes how the famous Ivens makes dějové zkratky after visiting China:

“Although the visuals are dramatic, moving, and at times horrific, the footage lacks continuity; therefore, because of the restraints placed on Ivens and his crew, the film relies heavily on the spoken word both to carry the story forward and to evoke a sense of the subjectivity and nuances of life in a nation under siege.”

So, technically, as you can see in the links, it would be "scene transitions", but I do find it a bit redundant.

Documentary filmmaking is capturing reality in some way with the script often written AFTER the shooting has begun.

With narrative, the story and script are crafted in the beginning and with documentary, the story (often) unfolds as it happens.

neutral  Hannah Geiger (X): I am afraid doc.film narration is not quite what you describe, your ref. is on writing, not film making, narration in a documentary film is of an informative, and not necessarily creative, nature, IMO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNIw7fHEXjU

-> Come on, Hannah, it doesn't take much imagination to apply this to documentary films. I include a very similar quote about a documentary.

flashback

Explanation:
"The purpose of flashbacks in a screenplay is to give the audience information that is needed to move the story forward and to clarify the actions of the characters. ..."

Ovšemže může být i "flashforward" podle směru dějové zkratky.
Erudovaně pak "analepsis" a "prolepsis""

From my film work experience in English, it feels like this is translating BACK to English where this term in Czech comes from.
