Napinjalo (čivijište) je većinom oblikovano vrlo samovoljno. Strune su se u Turkestanu, zemlji jahača, izrađivale od konjske dlake (danas iz crijeva ili čelika), a u Kini od početka do danas od svile. Znatno je da su turkestanske lutnje kod naroda istočne Azije uvedene tek u vrijeme procvata konfucijanizma (200. pr. Kr.); prvo turkestanska lutnja s bočnicama, zatim perzijska ljuskasta lutnja.
