a continuous hierarchy Explanation: Facets present new challenges in user interface design as multiple hierarchies need to be navigated and dynamically recombined. One possible solution may be described using a metaphor of parallel universes and wormholes. In this model a graphical process allows the user to jump through a succession of separate ontologies or facets with a single query. The wormhole method is unique in that it presents the results as if they are a continuous hierarchical pathway, even though the actual pathway does not exist in the knowledge-base; it is dynamically constructed by the user. In the following two examples the > sign indicate where the user has wormholed from one facet to another; in both cases the results display like a continuous hierarchy We analyse cDNA microarray experiments to extract the organisation of transcriptional activity in the yeast, S. cerevisiae. Nodes of the resulting network (graph) are transcriptional responses and links indicate high similarities. In this network, we find a continuous hierarchy leading from the small number of nodes at central locations towards the large number of peripheral nodes. The most important indicator of this continuous hierarchy is the degree sequence decaying as a power-law.
