Chinese term or phrase: 弃水
Does anyone know if there is a term to describe water that flows through a hydropower generating dam, or to be more exact, through turbine blades, but is not used to generate hydropower, or a term to describe this phenomenon? I will appreciate it if you can provide English references.

neutral  Bea Geenen: You've misread your own reference - not the water is disused but the station.

Surplus water/overflow

Explanation:
Here is a link showing that translation of 弃水 is 'surplus water'
http://www.dictall.com/indu/114/1130493C385.htm

Here is a link describing "Surplus water would travel down spill off overflow pipes to the lower part of the column exiting away from the wind turbine column to the sea. These overflow pipes would show at a glance the penstock has a sufficient head of water for the hydro turbine generator to operate at full power."

Here is a link showing that 弃水堰 is a 'overflow weir'

*I am not an expert in any of these subject, but this seems to match your concept

Example sentence(s):
  • 结合工程实例应用扩散法,给出了无压隧洞水力过渡过程数值模拟的基本方程以及上下游及弃水堰等边界附加方程,模拟了弃水堰布置在不同位置下,无压隧洞内的水位变化过程。
  • Through the analysis & comparison study of several different hydraulic regulation modes, it is proposed to adopt the economic operation mode of less surplus water & more generated power should.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you. I like the word "surplus" here, as it implies overcapacity. However, I think I still have to define 弃水, because it should be noted that this discharged water should have been used to generate power if there are sufficient transmission facilities or demand is higher.

idle discharge

Explanation:
The term idle discharge seems to be used in some Russian literature, as in the link.

I can't find anything better than this at the moment, and I think it would be comprehensible. But it doesn't seem to be exactly the right technical term. If I find anything better, I'll add it.
