Chinese term or phrase: 加持

且不論選民反對的理由為何，民調數字與政治人物、好萊塢明星的加持，過去數月來，第八案始終被認定不可能通過。

What is the meaning of 加持? it's used by a Taiwanese author..I have never heard of this word. Thanks!

Asker: Thanks for the answer. However, the word "endorsement" sounds like a legal term that refers to the signing of a document or something which is "officially" approved while in the article, there's no such meaning... should I just use "support" then?
