Catalan term or phrase: terror en directe
"L’edició del Festival de Sitges 2007 va ser l’inici del «fenomen REC», va significar el triomf d’un nou cinema de gènere fet a Catalunya, el «terror en directe»."

Any bright ideas about how to translate this, please...? Best I have so far is "horror filmed as live", or "horror filmed in real time", neither of which are too snappy!

Thanks

I guess it's not really live, but that's what they're calling it in Catalan (for the sake of being snappy, no doubt).

agree  Montse Ballesteros: No només en diuen així en català, en anglès també. Són pel·lis que parlen de cinema dins el cinema o falsos documentals, com The Blair Witch Project.

agree  Berni Armstrong: ...or even "Camcorder live horror" - since most of them are designed to look like they've been shot on hand held home video recorders - or even are!

found footage (horror film)

Explanation:
I found this after a bit of research. It even lists REC and REC 2 as part of this relatively new genre within horror films.
Here is the definition:
Found footage is a genre of horror filmmaking in which all or a substantial part of a film is presented as an edit of recovered footage, often left behind by missing or dead protagonists. The events onscreen are seen through the camera of one or more of the characters involved, who often speaks offscreen. Filming is often done by the actors themselves as they recite their lines, and shaky camerawork is also often used to maintain realism.
