Tech/Engineering - Agriculture / carts
Catalan term or phrase: bastaix
Carros

I am afraid I'm no expert in carts...:-( The only meaning I have found for 'bastaix' is 'porter' in Termcat - but it refers to a human being, not an object! I would then think it could be 'shaft', but that sounds like it could be 'maimó' - another word I'm not sure of! So, I am a bit stumpted. I'll post maimó separately in any case. This text is from Mallorca, by the way.

Any ideas about what the 'bastaixos' are would be very gratefully received!

Many thanks in advance,

Sheila

P.S. I've being trying to get into the Dic. català-valencià-balear for the last 15 minutes and can't open it - I've no idea why!

Wheel rims

Explanation:
Working "backwards" from the type of wood, ash wood was commonly used for making wheel rims.

Why were the best cart wheels made from three different types of wood? Ash for the rim, because it can stand the impacts without splitting.

Just an idea.

Sorry, I left this open so long. I never did get an answer from the client and am still unsure of the translation. That's why I left it open in the hope that one day I would find the answer. Thanks very much for your help!

Explanation:
Andy, no, I don't have any better suggestions, and that's why I didn't venture to give an answer. I did some research on the subject and found only what Sheila herself had found.
Be that as it may, there are quite a few better suggestions than simply taking potshots or engaging in a round of wild guessing, which is what your "suggestion" amounts to. In fact, your answer is almost certainly wrong because the author spoke of the wheels earlier in the paragraph and the reference to "bastaixos" is in the middle of a description of woods used for different cart chassis parts (sola, baranes, maimons i braços).
My "better suggestion": Sheila should ask the author, if possible, or the agency, or add a footnote.
