For instance, in a previous question you posted, the text seemed to hint at a Marxist vantage point, and that had an impact on the choice of translation. In this particular quote, it is not even clear if the writer meant anything at all. He may simply wanted an adjective, and معنوي seemed vague enough for his purpose (or non-purpose).
