agree  Brittany Jones: This is just my personal experience, but when I was in Syria I taught English to elementary-age children at an orphanage and they would always call me "tante", but they were Muslim.

TANTE is used in Lebanon on a wide range, not only Christiane used it but Muslims and others. in Lebanon we use tante for our mother in law and for our young aunties as well as a form of respect.

Reference information:
Also Egypt at the time of Monarchy( King Farouk) had an ´Elite´ (Bourgeoisie) which was educated in French... So the French language was very much present in the country... Thus the adoption of colloquial french terms such as `tante´...
