النيازك والشهب meteors and comets Explanation: لست واثقاًمن صحة وصفها بأنها من الظواهر الطبيعية. هي أجسام فلكية وربما يمكن وصفها بأنها من الظواهر الكونية. قد ينطبق وصف الظاهرة الكونية عليها عند دخولها المجال الجوي الأرضي واحتراقها فيه أو ارتطامها بالأرض وما يترتب عليه من آثار -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 19 mins (2005-08-26 15:30:18 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- تصحيح للجملة الأخيرة قد ينطبق وصف الظاهرة الطبيعية عليها عند دخولها المجال الجوي الأرضي واحتراقها فيه أو ارتطامها بالأرض وما يترتب عليه من آثار المقصود أنها تصبح ظاهرة طبيعية عند دخولها الأرض أو مجالها -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs 57 mins (2005-08-26 21:08:30 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- On reading Khalid's comment I reviewed the terms again. It appears that "meteoroid" maybe more accurate than "meteor". The difference is subtle but relevant. A meteor is a celestial particle that is only observable by the streak of light it makes when it enters the atmosphere. A meteoroid is that particle regardless of the visual effect it causes, or that particle as it circles around the sun. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 6 hrs 12 mins (2005-08-26 21:23:25 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- I should mention that while there is some distinction between the English words comet and meteor (or meteoroid), English-Arabic dictionaries tend to regard شهاب and نيزك as synonyms and they provide both terms, comet and meteor, as translations for them. But since العطف يفيد التباين, the context here must expect that شهاب and نيزك are different terms. In this case we opt for translating شهاب as comet, because a comet is always associated with a glowing tail resulting from the gases that surround it, and the word شهاب is an Arabic synonym for لهب. Here is a definition from On the other hand, here is a definition of نيزك from الغني نَزَكَ فلانًا -ُ نَزْكًا: طعنه بالنَّيْزَك. و- عابَه وطعَنَ فيه بغير حقٍّ. النَّزَّاكُ: العيَّاب الطَّعّان في النَّاس. النُّزَكُ: النَّزَّاكُ. النَّزيكُ: المَعِيبُ. النَّيْزَكُ: الرُّمحُ القَصير و- جرم سماوي يسبح في الفضاءِ فإِذا دخل في جوِّ الأَرض احترق وظهر كأَنه شهاب ثاقب متساقط -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 6 hrs 21 mins (2005-08-26 21:32:19 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- Shooting stars and falling stars: These are just non-scientific lay terms for meteors. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 11 hrs 36 mins (2005-08-27 02:46:57 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- The link below shows that Arabic dictionaries are not so wrong after all, and that the differences between meteoroid and comet are fairly blurry: http://www.nearearthobjects.co.uk/faqs_view.cfm?code=faqs_in... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 11 hrs 40 mins (2005-08-27 02:51:46 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- This answers the question of whether comets hit the other and how frequently: http://smallcomets.physics.uiowa.edu/faq.htmlx -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 11 hrs 41 mins (2005-08-27 02:52:20 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- I meant "hit the earth" not "hit the other" of course. |
