Because this is a transcription, it is possible that a comma is missing between these words. "I zaift" is clearly a literal transcription of how the word is pronounced by people.

This is completely hypothetical, but if as a result of the typo the phrase here was altered and should instead have been "si zaift", then it would make better sense as "i zeshkët si zift", hence, dark as tar (with "zaift" being a regional pronunciation of "zift"). In any case, "zaift" is also the mispronunciation of a term used to mean emaciated, and I doubt the exact appearance of the subject in question bears that much weight in the gist of the translation.

The text is not in Standard Albanian and there is a lot of typing errors. But I don't get the meaning of your suggestion, how would it translate? -- Perhaps it's a case of bad sound quality or bad pronounciation, it's a transcript from a recording. My guess: i zeshtë (dh)e zaift.

"zaif" is not an adjective that requires a clitic. Is there a chance the phrase was ""i zeshtë si zaift"?
