English term or phrase: bi-monthly
Now how many times we publish if we are publishing a magazine (or newsletter, or whatever) if the magazine is bi-monthly. Twice a month (24 issues a year)? or every other month (6 issues a year)?
Dics are very ambiguous about this (at least ones I got).
humbird
occurring every two months or occurring twice a month
Explanation:
that is in Webster's dictionary
some web sites:www.californiamortgagerate.net: "Instead of you making your loan payment once a month, your checking account is debided for one-half of this amount every two weeks. Instead of 12 monthly payments, you are making 24 half payments....
or www.cbabook.org : " Six times a year members and subscribers receive their own trade magazine....

You'll see, it is some problem with understanding what does it mean bi-monthly ....
Personaly I woud take first option, because we'll get payed bi-weekly, twice a month. Don't we? But, I might be wrong again.

agree  Laurel Porter (X): I believe the confusion simply arises from incorrect usage that is gradually becoming accepted. Let's help keep things consistent - bimonthly=6x a year, semi-monthly=24.

Explanation:
I understand your question better now, there's a lot of contradictory information out there (such as the two examples below), but bi-monthly is "once every other month" and semi-monthly means twice a month.

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary
Main Entry: 1bi·month·ly
Pronunciation: (")bI-'m&n(t)th-lE
Function: adjective
1 : occurring every two months
2 : occurring twice a month : SEMIMONTHLY

Bi-Monthly Mortgage Calculator
This calculator will show you how much you will save if you make 1/2 of your mortgage payment every two weeks instead of making a full mortgage payment once a month. In effect, you will be making one extra mortgage payment per year -- without hardly noticing the additional cash outflow. But, as you're about to discover, you will certainly notice the "increased" cash flow that will occur when you pay your mortgage off way ahead of schedule!

agree  bigedsenior: For some reason this term has become ambiguous. There is no problem with the other "bi-s", bi-weekly, bi-yearly, bi-centennail. To avoid ambiguity, one should use semi- or twice-monthly, and "every other" or every second month.

agree  mstkwasa: OED: (Occurring or produced) every two months; n., a bi-monthly periodical. Also used = occurring (etc.) twice a month (cf. semi-monthly) // I think it means "every two months" here if it's a magazine.
